I know you've been thinking this all day long, so often and so much that it keeps you up at night. Don't deny it.
You want to know, "What the heck are compression socks? Who uses these? And WHY? And then WHEN??"
I know I did. The question irked me to my very core.
I saw a lot of runners and triathletes wearing these little leg sleeves. And then knee-high socks. And I thought, that's an interesting fashion statement.
But I found out it's a little more than that.
There's this whole world of things that people use that I am not privvy to, and thanks to my friends at Outside PR, I got a chance to do a little research on these things called compression socks.
So I tried the socks.
This is what they look like while I'm wearing pajamas after a sprint triathlon.
Ooooh, they were very comfy.
I was pretty sure that they were doing something good for me. They were all snuggy on my legs. The next day my legs felt pretty good. I wore them again the next day after running 8 miles, the day after doing a sprint tri (CRAZY TALK) and my legs felt pretty good that following day too. In fact, in hindsight, I think they worked well as recovery socks. Because my legs felt great on Monday! I still took Monday off (because I freakin deserved it after that weekend) but when I returned for some speedwork on the treadmill, my legs were like new and they felt freakin' fantastic.
Could it be the socks?
I don't know. But during my research I read an article from last year's Runner's World that made me fall out of my chair with laughter (and made me aspire to be at least HALF as witty as this writer) and I share it with you, it's hilarious. And if you don't click on it, at least listen to this description of compression socks from the Runner's World writer:
"I have become addicted to wearing them postrun until preslumber. I've ridden the train and sat at my desk and, yes, performed my radio show with my calves in a warm, private embrace.""Warm, private embrace." *snicker.* Don't you just love good writing?
But I agree! Because I wore them post-tri and post-run and though I looked a little ridiculous in my heart pajamas and knee-highs, I felt fantastic. Of course, I couldn't publish my own findings about compression socks without of course first questioning the all-knowing master of running Coach Joe, and this is his $.02:
"I think compression socks or calf guards in particular are very good for people that work out frequently and need help in recovery. This would be people that are running every day or triathletes working out everyday, for example." - Awesome Coach Joe.He also said they help in reducing the pain and soreness after tough workouts so you can hop back to it sooner. Which seems to be what happened for me! I will continue to wear mine post-workout. You can wear them during a workout too but it's too freakin hot here to wear anything on my legs.
The stats on these Sugoi R&R Compression Socks (Women's Specific)
- Foot specific- which means they are specifically formed to fit L or R with little markings on the fit
- Mesh venthilation for air flow
- Cushioning at the heel and toe for impact
- Good for training OR recovery!

I'm thinking I need a pair. Must look into $$. 'Cuz I'm pretty sure compression socks or money aren't growing on trees, right?

Dude I want. I always have very unhappy calf muscles after running so I'm anxious to see if something like this would work. it definitely makes sense... I'm in nursing school and I know they wear socks like this while working. :)
I bought a pair in San Diego at the Expo, to better support my injured leg and help with shin splints. I love them and while the description is a bit cheesy above, it is so, so true... They are like a giant hug!
I've been reading and I really want to try a pair! Just haven't had the $

tweeted about your "party" just hoping my kids allow me to participate.
I have never tried compression socks but the folks at my local running store SWEAR by them. I have a lot of calf, shin and ankle soreness after running so maybe I should put fashion aside and give them a try.

Sign me up for this one. My niece is a track star (IMHO!!) and she swears by them - especially if she feels shin splints coming on (I get those alot). I might need me some of these babies!
Enter me again, cause I'm gonna tweet it out!
I have a pair of compression socks but they aren't Sugoi, I hear the Sugoi ones are pretty awesome. I'd love a chance to win a pair to try for myself.
And I tweeted about it (and I also follow you now and subscribe to your blog, I don't know what took me so long to find you). :)
I saw the Vineman triathletes wearing compression socks. I had no idea what they were for. Thanks for doing the research! I would love to have a pair of these socks! My legs could use a private embrace after a long run. Wait, that sounded naughty. You know what I mean. Stop giggling. Seriously. LOL

Oooh, I'm dying to try these! I wish I had them now, after doing a very hilly 8 miler this morning. My calves are screaming! I've seen them, but never tried them....
I do not own any, but I saw her hotness, Tiffany Z., wearing them on race day. I want to be hot like her.
I DO use compression stockings and socks! Not as often or regularly as I ought to (I'm paraplegic and edema is a constant problem), but I do feel better when I wear them. They are hard to put on sometimes, but I do like them!
Thanks!

Sounds like something I need! As much time as I spend on my feet something to help my calves recover would be great!!
I have a pair of CEP compression socks and love them. I do think they help for sure. I could use another pair though for when I am washing my CEP ones.

I have a pair of compression socks that I bought at the Seattle RNR expo. Ended up running the half in them. I also wear them on my 12 hour night shift, especially before or after long runs. Definitely could use another pair, would like to compair the two.
